More video: Joel Salatin (rocks!)

Forgive me another video post right after the previous! But I found this video on Twitter today, and I just had to share it. It’s Joel Salatin, of Polyface Farm, the amazing, outspoken farmer who is doing things right. He’s been featured in Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma and in the movie Food, Inc., and he’s written a few books himself. The title of the talk is “Pathways to Relocalization,” but in it Joel hits on everything from our disconnection from each other, the importance of hearth & home, the sham of government “food safety” regulations, and why we need to reconnect locally in order to survive globally. This was recorded just a few days ago, too. The more I read from and listen to Mr. Salatin, the more I love him. This man is just full of awesome!

    One of the local farms I get meat from (Hickory Nut Gap in Fairview, NC) uses Joel’s methods, so I’m very lucky there. Another farm I use was heavily influenced by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, so I’m in good hands whichever place I go. Now–how do we get tons (and tons) more farms doing this? :D

    (On a related note, I was just reading this morning about how industrial cows are being fed ethanol waste, and that it may be related to increased incidence of e coli. It’s history repeating itself–they used to feed industrial cows what was left after distilling drinking alcohol. What a health mess that turned out to be! The article ended with a quote from the article they’d been reading: “The … president of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association said he pays $35 a ton for distillers grains, the equivalent of $2.85 a bushel for corn. In his area, corn has been selling for more than $4 a bushel. It takes the equivalent of 70 bushels of corn to fatten a steer.” OR YOU COULD, I DON’T KNOW…FEED THEM GRASS!) [link]

    Thanks for posting….he is a wealth of information. I am currently reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma.
    So glad I found your web site…..was researching Fatty Liver/Fructose connection and your site popped up.
     My dear sister was diagnosed with non alcoholic cirrhosis a few years ago.Very troubleing…now we are finding out how and why this was possible.
