Real food sweet treat: Mounds/Almond Joy bars

Sorry for the poor picture quality; I wasn’t really ready to photograph this recipe! I’ll take better pics when I make it next and will update this post accordingly. But at least you can still see the yumminess… Happy Easter to those who celebrate it! Since I stopped eating candy or sweets, I must say [...]

Simple Black Bean Chili

While I love to cook, I don’t really get into trying lots of new recipes, especially if they require items I don’t usually keep on hand. I cook based on what I’ve got in my pantry. I don’t “meal plan” per se, as I buy the staples that I can afford in a given week [...]

Adventures in Bone Broth, Chapter 2: Crock pot stock

Let me say right now that I think bone broth is the easiest, most delicious, and most cost-effective way of improving and maintaining health; it is true kitchen alchemy, the power of the hearth at work. I’m going to write soon about that power in more detail, but for today I’ll just focus on another [...]

Quick Flax Bread

Ok, this isn’t really a “bread.” It has no yeast, no grain, and therefore no gluten. It’s perfect if you want a bread-like food but don’t (or can’t) eat actual bread. This little “loaf” comes out flat, and when cut, the slices have the shape of biscotti, as you can see in the photo above. [...]

February Self-Challenges: Real bread, kombucha, and sauerkraut

Whoops…I’m a bit late posting my next month’s self-challenges…heh. *blush* As for the January self-challenges, I “won” two out of three. I’d posted already that I decided to forego the no-TV challenge, since I just missed it too much. NOT the ads and NOT the news—I refuse to watch either (egads, I’ve become my father…I [...]

Real food for one: Fast & Easy Beef & Tomato Soup

As I mentioned when I started this site, I’m going to focus a lot on how a single person can eat real food (single by choice, circumstance, or because your family’s away for the night—doesn’t matter). I’ve heard plenty of my single friends claim that “cooking for one” and buying real food for one person [...]

Mason jar philosophizing

One thing I loved to study back in grad school was symbolism. I was working toward an English M.A., and while most people don’t realize it, such a course of study involves a lot of theory in various topics such as sociology, communication, gender issues, politics, etc. This is because language crosses all those lines, [...]

Simple, delicious dutch oven bread

I made bread! I have now been able to make two delicious loaves of bread, and I feel like I’ve reached a milestone. There really is something magical about combining four basic ingredients, giving it some time, and ending up with a substance that is comforting and nourishing. I start to truly feel the power [...]

January self-challenge update, real food recipes, homefront updates, and an enchilada blanket

This post originally appeared on my other blog, Avidly Dreaming. Two of my three January self-challenges are going along swimmingly. So far, line-drying my clothes and not using the dryer is no big deal. Switching to real foods is easy and yummy. But the no-TV challenge? I voluntarily broke that one last night.
